The spectacular mountain views are everywhere on the Franconia Inn’s 65-acre property, but there’s something special about seeing them from a saddle. At the Franconia Notch Stables, horseback-riding excursions take you over the Inn’s extensive trail system, through fields and forests and even over a river where your horse may stop for a drink, or, in the summer, give you a refreshing splash. Professional guides and beginner-friendly horses ensure a relaxing, one-hour trek through beautiful scenery. You might see deer, turtles, beavers, or even a moose! There’s a four-person maximum per tour, and riders must be at least 10 years old. The stables also offer horse-drawn sleigh rides in the winter!

Many resorts are dog-friendly, but how many are horse-friendly? At the Mountain Top Resort, their Equestrian Center is open Memorial Day weekend through October, offering guided one- and two-hour rides over 40 miles of designated trails. Walk, trot or canter through mountain pastures, over wooded trails, surrounded by thousands of acres of National Forest overlooking a glittering lake. Ride one of the center’s horses or bring your own and either get a day pass or board your horse overnight at the center. Both experienced riders and those new to the saddle (English or Western) will enjoy the experience of being immersed in nature while touring miles of trails.
