The Magic of Christmas at the Florence Griswold Museum -- Old Lyme

The Florence Griswold Museum in Old Lyme hosts three magical offerings this year. First is an exhibit of lavishly decorated fantasy trees. Then, new painted palettes added this year to Miss Florence’s Artist Tree, brings the number to over 100 pieces of artwork. And finally, the main floor of the house evokes the homespun preparations for a festive 1910 Christmas in a boardinghouse for artists. Location: Florence Griswold Museum, 96 Lyme Street. Christkindlmarkt - Christmas Market -- Newington

Almost Germany! The Hartford Saengerbund (German Club) begins the Christmas season with its Christkindlmarkt (Christmas Market). There will be traditional German and American Christmas music, "Kurrende Singers," many costumed events, Saengerbund Dancers, visits from the Three Wise Men, St. Nikolaus and his helper Hans Muff and much more. Vendors will be offering German imports (smokers, nutcrackers, pewter ornaments, advent calendars, linens, beer steins, etc.) and handcrafted items. Nantucket Noel Celebration and Christmas Stroll Weekend -- Nantucket

Nantucket is particularly enchanting during the holiday season, when New England’s finest traditions come alive for Nantucket Noel from November 27 to December 31 and the Christmas Stroll Weekend on December 4-6. Nantucket Noel opens with a Christmas Tree Lighting ceremony and community caroling on November 27 on Main Street. The Christmas Stroll Weekend is a community holiday celebration attracting visitors from around the world. Santa and Mrs. Claus arrive to the island via a Coast Guard vessel and ride up Main Street in a horse-drawn carriage accompanied by the Town Crier. This winter wonderland attracts thousands of visitors each year who get into the holiday spirit by strolling along tree-lined paths lit by thousands of twinkling lights. Upon entering the Zoo, guests will visit Yukon Creek, which not only features dazzling holiday lights but is also home to bald eagles, porcupines, lynx, a gray fox and reindeer. Children will want to make sure they visit with Santa, who awaits their arrival in Santa’s Castle. Jolly Old St. Nick will be available for photos through December 23. Holiday Selections 2009 -- Providence

For the holiday season, Bert Gallery has assembled a fine selection of artwork by local artists, both past and present. Many of the paintings are by noted Providence painters from the late 19th century. In addition, there is a special exhibit of vintage artist greeting cards for sale. For Gallery Night Providence on November 19 at 6:30 p.m., Wells Pile, a local printmaking enthusiast, will demonstrate the printing process from vintage woodblocks of Rhode Island artists.
