New England - Green Lodgings
New England Green Hotels and Resorts and Green Lodgings Information at Visit New England
“Green hotel” and “green-certified hotel” are becoming familiar terms for travelers as hotels and lodgings from the smallest bed and breakfast or country inn to the largest urban hotel or motel jump onto the environmental bandwagon. In general, green certification means that hotels, motels, and other lodgings have begun using environmental conservation practices to achieve standards that various state or federal programs require for certification – a sort of Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval for environmentalism. Practices can range from linen reuse programs, in which guests can opt to reuse towels and linens rather than have them laundered daily, to use of energy-efficient appliances, florescent lighting, alternate fuels, low-flow plumbing fixtures, and non-toxic cleaners. The growing trend is being driven in large part by the demands of environmentally friendly guests and competition among lodgings to woo these guests.

With the 4th and 5th generations of the Hoyt family currently running operations at Purity Spring, the family continues to seek ways to cut back its energy use. The Hoyt Family has been respectful of the environment through the generations. Here are some of the ways in which we continue to minimize our environmental footprint:
- A portion of the lodging units, currently being refurbished, are now using energy-efficient fans. All other units will eventually be replaced.
- Purity Lake has been kept 100% free of development. Other than buildings that were built years ago, the Hoyt family has kept all development to an absolute minimum.
- Purity Resort guests have enjoyed fishing, swimming, canoeing and kayaking on Purity Lake since the early 1900’s. Motorized boating is restricted except for a company-owned boat which is used minimally for its guests and boy’s camp.
- High-extraction washers are used in all laundry areas at each resort.
- Light bulbs have been or are currently being replaced with high efficiency lighting in one way or another throughout all businesses.
- Purity Spring Resort offers “Purity Green Weddings”. These weddings consist of ceremonies and receptions that offer minimal impact on the environment. For example, weddings held on “Purity Island” use minimal power and offer menus that use natural or organic foods that are grown locally. A number of different programs with varying degrees of “green”, are offered to the bride and groom to minimize the waste produced by large gatherings such as weddings.

An Inn for All Seasons
Email See Map
The Inn, which is celebrating its 175th anniversary in 2008, began instituting environmentally friendly practices in the mid-1990s. The classic resort, ideally situated in the heart of Stowe Village has 106 unique rooms, suites and apartments offering the perfect blend of elegance and modern comfort - many feature canopy beds, fireside Jacuzzis and other amenities. Guests can do their part to conserve energy by reusing towels, linens and turning off lights when not in use.
To reduce transportation costs and support local infrastructures, the Inn’s two restaurants use local products from farms, ranches, breweries and cheese companies. The goal is to reduce transportation costs and support local infrastructures. Implementing practices as recycling, composting and changing to energy efficient light bulbs are simple steps and we are now looking at what else we can do to reduce our energy consumption and educate our staff and guests on why we think this is so important.
