Energy efficiency and environmental responsibility have always been a core values of Irving House, and as technologies evolve we are continuing to find new ways to lighten our footprint while maintaining a high level of services to our guests. Breakfast and snack items are purchased locally to support local small businesses. Recycling, bulk purchases and reuse of packaging & in-room dispensers helps to cut down on costs as well as garbage.

Engineering has also played a large part in this process. Many improvements have been made to the electrical, heating, cooling and hot water systems to conserve energy and increase efficiency. These efforts gained Irving House an EPA Energy Star label in 2005. And most recently, in 2009 we installed solar panels with an evacuated tube system, to provide hot water for the main house and reduce the need for natural gas heat.

Guests are encouraged to enjoy the city on foot, bike or by public transit, and not just for the green impact. There is an abundance of cultural, historical shopping and dining opportunities all around the inn and the Greater Boston area and there's no better way to enjoy it than up close & personal.

Set on a pristine lake, and surrounded by green hills, the Resort provides a beautiful natural setting that is fun and welcoming to people of all ages. In the villages and hills surrounding the Resort, you'll find charming town centers, farms, and general stores, as well as ski areas, and cross-country and snowmobile trails. If you leave the lake and Resort area, you are never more than a short hike or bike to other spectacular views.

That said, there really isn't any reason to leave the Resort's grounds. With the 4th and 5th generations of the Hoyt family currently running operations at Purity Spring, the family continues to seek ways to cut back its energy use. The Hoyt Family has been respectful of the environment through the generations. Here are some of the ways in which we continue to minimize our environmental footprint:

• A portion of the lodging units, currently being refurbished, are now using energy-efficient fans. All other units will eventually be replaced.
• Purity Lake has been kept 100% free of development. Other than buildings that were built years ago, the Hoyt family has kept all development to an absolute minimum.
• Purity Resort guests have enjoyed fishing, swimming, canoeing and kayaking on Purity Lake since the early 1900’s. Motorized boating is restricted except for a company-owned boat which is used minimally for its guests and boy’s camp.
• High-extraction washers are used in all laundry areas at each resort.
• Light bulbs have been or are currently being replaced with high efficiency lighting in one way or another throughout all businesses.
• Purity Spring Resort offers “Purity Green Weddings”. These weddings consist of ceremonies and receptions that offer minimal impact on the environment. For example, weddings held on “Purity Island” use minimal power and offer menus that use natural or organic foods that are grown locally. A number of different programs with varying degrees of “green”, are offered to the bride and groom to minimize the waste produced by large gatherings such as weddings.

The Inn is set on a lightly traveled country road and offers the quintessential New England experience, just a few minutes from the slopes at Sugarbush.
