The Manchester and the Mountains region truly is a Four-Season Wonderland. Want proof? Pick a view any view. Now consider that view variously dressed in winter¹s brilliant whites, spring and summer¹s palette of greens and the reds, yellows and gold of autumn. Okay, which is most beautiful? And another thing: We¹re just as much fun in the warmer months as we are in winter. Consider, for example, championship golf and tennis playing, fly fishing, water-slide riding, gondola riding, mountain biking, hiking, canoeing, kayaking, river rafting, tubing, swimming, theater going, horseback riding, apple picking and leaf peeping.

Few structures in America combine architectural ingenuity, economic necessity, and romantic idealism better than the covered bridge. Covered bridges flourished in the United States in the 19th century. Pennsylvania has the greatest number of covered bridges, and Vermont, with about 104 covered bridges, has the highest number relative to the state’s size. In Southern Vermont, some highlights of the many covered bridges include the Bridge at the Green (Arlington Bridge) in Arlington and the Henry / Burt Bridge in Bennington, which is a short distance from the rebuilt Paper Mill Bridge and the Silk Bridge. Covered bridges offer a wonderful opportunity to stop, take pictures, dip your feet in the river, and even to picnic.

Foliage Drives in Vermont Foliage Drives in Vermont

The spectacular colors of Vermont’s hillsides in the fall are famous the world over. Peak viewing time is mid-September in the northern areas to late October in the south. Below are some driving loops where visitors can see spectacular foliage. Keep these points in mind:

♦ Different varieties of trees change at different times. Red maples are among the first to change, especially those along roadsides and in wet areas.
♦ The earliest foliage change generally occurs in the northern part of the state near the Canadian border and at higher elevations.
♦ By mid-September full color begins to appear across the north, moving progressively south during October. Typically, groups of trees with brilliant color can be found throughout September.
♦ "Peak color” is a bit of a myth, since every person has their own ideas of what peak looks like. Typically, the fullest color can be found from late-September in the north through mid-October in the south.
♦ Many experienced foliage viewers actually consider late October the most beautiful time in Vermont. Once the most brilliant colors have passed, the hills take on a subtler and richer range of hues that are just as beautiful, if not as spectacular.

Getting to Southern Vermont By Car

Southern Vermont is bounded by Massachusetts to the south, New Hampshire to the east, and New York to the west.

From Massachusetts and Connecticut, take I-91 north, which travels along the eastern border of the state and on to the Canadian border.

From northern Vermont, Canada, and points north, I-91 and U.S. Route 7 each travel one side of the region from north to south. Travelers from Montreal can pick up I-91 by taking I-89 south from Burlington.

From New York City, New Jersey and points south: Take I-87 north to Albany in New York, and pick up Route 7, which goes directly into Bennington.

From New York State and points west, I-88 and I-90 both travel east into Albany, where Route 7 can be picked up to the Vermont border.

From New Hampshire, Southern Vermont is best accessed via NH Route 9, which runs from Keene west into Vermont, just north of Brattleboro.

In Southern Vermont, I-91 travels through Brattleboro, Dummerston, Putney, Westminster, Saxtons River and Rockingham.

On the western side of the state, U.S. Route 7 crosses the Massachusetts border at Pownal, then winds through Bennington, Shaftsbury, Arlington, Manchester and Dorset.

VT Route 9 runs between Brattleboro and Bennington, and through Marlboro, Wilmington, Searsburg and Woodford.

Further north, VT Route 11 runs eastward out of Manchester, passing through Pery and Londonderry.

Getting to the Central Vermont By Car

Visitors can easily reach Central Vermont by car, using several Interstate highways:

From Western Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York City and points south, travelers can take I-91 north which traverses Vermont along its eastern border with New Hampshire.

From New York City and New Jersey, travelers may also elect to take I-87 (the New York thruway) north to Albany, then pick up U.S. Route 7 north into Vermont. U.S. Route 7 is known as the Ethan Allen Highway, and runs along the western edge of Vermont and Lake Champlain.

Travelers from New Hampshire, Boston, and points south and east should take I-89 north, which enters the state at White River Junction, and goes all the way to the Canadian border.

On 1,200 pristine acres in the heart of Vermont's breathtaking Green Mountains, Hawk has created one of the most peaceful and unspoiled resorts in the world. Luxurious villas and a 50-room inn offer an elegant perspective on these ancient wooded peaks. President Calvin Coolidge, who loved to stroll the very same woods in which Hawk villas are now artfully concealed, once wrote: "There is healing in the trees for tired minds. And for overburdened spirits, there is strength in the hills." Whether you seek rejuvenation in the blissful silence and beauty of Vermont's countryside, or prefer the exhilaration of world-class service and unparalleled recreational offerings, there is one extraordinary resort that provides the very best of both. In Vermont, it is Hawk.
