Discover Maine's Prettiest Village! Known as the "Prettiest Village in Maine," Wiscasset is on the banks of the tidal Sheepscot River. Samuel Chamberlain, author of Old New England Villages, selected Wiscasset as the best example of a preserved New England village in Maine and since 1973, Wiscasset has been listed in the National Register as a historic district. Visitors can stroll the town's pleasant brick sidewalks and visit the many antique shops, art galleries, fine shops, and restaurants. Come explore Wiscasset's many handsome sea captains' homes built in the late 1700s and early 1800s, the old graveyards and museums.
